Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, located on the southern coast of the country, at the mouth of the Río de la Plata.
The city extends along a bay with a wide natural harbour. It limits to the north with the department of Canelones, to the east with the Río de la Plata, to the south with the Río de la Plata and to the west with the department of San José.
The city has an area of 201 km² and a population of around 1.3 million, making it the largest city in Uruguay and its economic and cultural center.
Montevideo is known for its colonial and modern architecture, its beaches, its parks, and its rich cultural life.
