Libertad is a city located in the department of San José, Uruguay.
It was founded in 1867 and its name is due to the liberation of slaves in the country. The city developed from the railway, which allowed the connection with Montevideo and the interior of the country.
In the 1940s, Libertad experienced an important economic boom thanks to the installation of the Cynar liquor factory, which became an important source of employment for the region.
Today, Libertad is known for its tourist attractions, such as Parque Artigas, Cerro de las Ánimas, and Laguna del Sauce, which offer numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, and water sports.
The city is accessible by road, through National Route 1 that connects it with Montevideo and other cities in the interior of the country. It also has a train station in the center of the city.
