Florida is a city located in south-central Uruguay, about 90 km north of Montevideo.
Founded in the year 1809, it is the capital of the department of Florida and has a population of around 33,000 inhabitants. The city is famous for being the birthplace of the Uruguayan writer Juan Carlos Onetti, and for its beautiful squares and parks.
To get to Florida from Montevideo, you can take a bus that leaves from Terminal Tres Cruces. It can also be reached by car on National Route 5.
Regarding its history, Florida played an important role in the Great War, a conflict that pitted rival political parties in Uruguay between 1839 and 1851.
During the war, the city was besieged and taken several times by both sides. In 1851, the Treaty of Montevideo was signed in the city, ending the war. Over the years, Florida has become a major commercial and cultural center for the region.
