San José de Mayo is the capital of the department of San José, Uruguay.
It was founded in 1783 by the governor of Montevideo, Joaquín de Viana.
During the Great War, it was an important center of military and political activity, and in 1851 it was the scene of the signing of the Treaty of San José de Flores, which put an end to the war.
The city was also a major commercial and cultural center in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and many of its historic buildings still stand.
Today, San José de Mayo is a quiet city with a rich history and interesting architecture.
