Nueva Palmira is a Uruguayan city located in the department of Colonia, on the banks of the Uruguay River.
It was founded in 1831 and its name is due to the fact that there were numerous palm trees in the area.
In the 19th century, Nueva Palmira became an important river port for the export of wool, meat, and hides to Europe and other Latin American countries.
Currently, the city maintains its port activity and is an important tourist center in the region, especially in summer, thanks to its beaches and its proximity to resorts such as Carmelo and Colonia del Sacramento.
