Initially called San Fernando de Maldonado, the name given to its inhabitants the gentile fernandinos.
It is to resort to the city of Punta del Este, with which currently is conurbada; and also partially, it is linked to the city of San Carlos, forming the conurbation San Carlos Maldonado-Punta del Este.
Among these three cities, and new developments such as La Capuera & Spa Buenos Aires, make up the metropolitan area of 131,758 inhabitants.
