La Pedrera is one of the oldest resorts on the Uruguayan coast, starting with the rock formations of the beach, with more than 600 million years old. Sea erosion and wind has whimsical and appealing to spa stones, which give name besides being its principal postal forms.
The coasts of La Pedrera were already known at the time of the colony. Formerly he called "Punta Rubia" because of the golden sands color seen by sailors from the ships. Many shipwrecks marked the history of the place and filled with legends for centuries. Today, Playa del Barco, the remains of the legendary wreck of Katay are.
The first division Spa in apples was in 1898. Roman Arrarte owned the large rural land on the beach. In 1910, the first families built their homes, mostly in the wadi. A decade later, it was consolidated for several tens of tourists arriving every summer to spend their seasons destination.

The characteristic shape of the terrain as a large balcony over the sea made it difficult urbanization, maintaining an air of people despite the elegance of the residences and the development of its tourism infrastructure. In 1950 he opened the first hotel and in 1960 was already running water and electricity and the Club La Pedrera, which organized social events. In the 80s he grew real estate, consolidating the spa as one of the traditional destinations of summer tourism. For over a decade, the Carnaval de La Pedrera is the convener event of the season, with more than 20 thousand young people who come to have fun for three consecutive days every February.
