La Paloma is an important spa and ocean port south of the department of Rocha, located at Cape Santa Maria, at the junction of Routes 10 and National 15.
The city was founded on 1 September 1874.
It is known for its tranquility and its beaches, whose length is approximately 20km. The permanent population of 3,495 inhabitants, increasing with the arrival of 30,000 tourists in the summer months (January-February).
The resort owes its name to that, formerly Cape Santa Maria was a very feared by sailors tip, and from afar because of the amount of rocks and foam of the waves, seemed to be the silhouette of a dove.
The spa consists of the old town, where the oldest residential buildings near the Lighthouse of La Paloma and opposite the island La Tuna, a small island whose only vegetation was a prickly pear in the center, although there is now a pine tree. Around the old town is the new center of La Paloma, with more recent constructions that extend along the main avenue, Avenida Solari. The homes are alpine style French design, most intended for rent.
A mid-twentieth century experienced a widening spa, with project by architects Carlos Gómez and Juan Antonio Scasso.2 Gavazzo La Paloma has different beaches of different characteristics (with rocks, with waves, calm waters, deep, areas fishing). Some of them are La Aguada, Costa Azul, La Balconada, Anaconda and the Cabito.
