The official name of the town is Faro Jose Ignacio.
40 kilometers from Punta del Este, at kilometer 182 of Route No. 10, for the way Sainz E. Martinez, the traveler is a paradisiacal and privileged corner of the Uruguayan Atlantic coast: the resort of José Ignacio.
It is a small peninsula that goes into the sea through its two kilometers long and 800 meters wide. On one side, facing west, is the Playa Mansa, with its small fishing boats and their magical sunsets. On the other side, admiring the East, the Playa Brava, wide and imposing waves.
José Ignacio owes its name to a local villager who inhabited the area at the time of the Spanish conquest. El Faro, symbol of the place, bearing the same name, and was built in 1877 in the most salient and rocky end of the peninsula. Its focal height is 32.5 meters, its geographical reach of 16.5 miles, and its light scope of 9 miles.
