Colonia del Sacramento is a city in southwestern Uruguay, located on the banks of the Río de la Plata.
Founded in the year 1680 by the Portuguese, its historic center is one of the oldest and best preserved in South America, which earned it the declaration of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
The city has various tourist attractions, such as the Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament, the Lighthouse and the Municipal Museum, as well as beautiful nearby beaches such as Playa Ferrando and Playa Honda.
Colonia del Sacramento is also known for its exquisite cuisine, especially its fish and seafood restaurants.
